Poem: I Came Home

I came home,
I looked around,
I realized that,
I was all alone.

No one to understand,
No one to hear my cries,
No one to realize that,

I have lived through the terror,
I have been the terror,
And now I am
All alone.

The death I have seen,
The death I have created,
Has left me isolated,
No one will ever understand,

The horrors I have created,
Only because I was ordered to:
Kill
Shoot
Maim
Rape
And I wanted to do none
But I did them all,

I am a soldier,
A veteran
Who will never feel
Really at home.

And I shall forever be…
All alone.

I was inspired to write this poem by a lady I met while walking in downtown Golden, Colorado selling my poetry book “Poetry for All Those Breathing”. She read a few poems and was almost in tears (I believe that she read my “Untitled” poem about war and she asked if I would write a poem for the veterans who fight for our country. This is the poem that came to me. I think so many veterans feel so alone after the return from war and are faced with the things that they were forced to do.
